Brother Gerard Byaruhanga (which means “For God the Creator”) was born on February 14th, 1958 in Nyakalongo, district of Kibale, Uganda. In 1976, it is in Kampala, where he was studying, that he got acquainted with the FIC of the La Mennais House, at the church the Brothers went. Bro Peter Katanga put him in touch with Bro Deogratias Ssekitooleko, the recruiter at that time, and for four years, Bro Gerard pursued his religious formation at Kisubi, before being placed in Ibanda in 1980.

Then he joined Rome where he studied philosophy and theology at Angelicum University. He passed a Bachelor’s degree in theology there before returning to his country in 1985. He taught at Saint Mary’s College and at the Postulate, in Kisubi, then became Director of the postulate and was elected as a member of the Provincial Council.

In 1988, he made formation courses in spiritual accompaniment and in animation of retreats at Kisubi before going to England for one year of counselling studies at the St-Anselme Institute, Kent. When he came back to Kisubi in 1990, Bro Gerard taught theology and spiritual discernment at the  Uganda Spiritual Formation Centre, at Kisubi, the direction of which he assumed for three years before being appointed Provincial Superior of the Province of Saint-Theresa-of-the Child Jesus in 1994. From 2000 to 2006, Bro Gerard assumed the responsibility, of the Charles-Jules Poitras Scholasticate, before he was elected as General assistant at the General Chapter of 2006.
