RWANDA – Gisenyi : 2 days of GREAT LAKES FORUM FOR PEACE AND SOCIAL COHESION 2026

Today, 23rd  September 2026, the Great Lakes Forum for Peace and Social Cohesion 2026 began at the Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle Headquarters, bringing together 120 participants from Rwanda, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Goma and Bukavu), and Uganda. As Day 1 of the two-day forum, the event provided a regional platform for dialogue, experience sharing, reflection and learning on issues affecting peace and social cohesion.

The day’s sessions focused on hate speech, intergenerational dialogue, digital media and misinformation, responsible communication, and youth engagement. Participants shared experiences and perspectives on the causes and consequences of hate speech while exploring how responsible communication and digital platforms can contribute to stronger social cohesion.

In the afternoon, participants were divided into groups for interactive games and practical exercises. Through visual and collective representations, they explored situations involving hate speech, harmful behaviour, the role of bystanders, and constructive ways young people can respond when confronted with harmful speech or behaviour.

The forum also featured experience sharing from peacebuilding actors from Rwanda, Eastern DRC and Uganda, highlighting practical lessons and experiences related to dialogue, reconciliation, mediation and community engagement.

Overall, Day 1 created a valuable space for regional dialogue, reflection, experience sharing and practical learning, laying a strong foundation for the continuation of the forum on Day 2.
