URUGUAY: Maldonado – Buenos Aires: A Transformative Encounter

Meeting between Students from Copello College in Buenos Aires and Children and Adolescents from the Dionisio Díaz Center in Maldonado, Uruguay: the Fifth-Grade Students from Cardenal Copello spent the last day of their Camp with a Meeting at the Service of the Youth of the Dionisio Díaz Center… a Meeting that Transforms… A busy Day during which they prepared Games for the Little Ones, had Lunch with them, and listened to the Story of Little Dionisio. Experiences of Volunteering with the Youth of the Center, which they told us…

“The Funny Thing that happened to me was that when we were talking with some of my Classmates and with the Children, we realized that we didn’t always say the same things in the same way. So we tried to see which ones were the same or how they and we said them. I think the day was full of Positive Emotions. We are all very grateful to have been able to go and for the Warm Welcome from the children and the Educational Team. It was an incredibly enriching experience to live that kind of experience with other young people like us…” (Pilar)

The Experience with the Dionisio Children opened Our Hearts: from Morning, with the Little Ones who eagerly awaited us to play and have fun, until the Afternoon with the Older Ones, many of whom were the same age as us. They told us about their Daily Lives and helped us understand how different the lives of Two Teenagers of the same age could be, while still living the same Mennaisian Values. I also had the Opportunity to walk around the Dionisio Neighborhood, an Enriching Experience that allowed us to better understand what life was like for the Children and Families who lived there…» (Coki)

To be honest, it was one of the Most Touching Moments of Our Visit: seeing their enthusiasm, even though they didn’t know we were just as excited as they were. At Noon, there was a Little Girl we had met. When her sister went to get her to leave, she grabbed one of us and insisted on staying. I think that defines a little bit of what the Dionisio Center meant to them. They went there because they wanted to and they liked it. You could see that they had a very Good Relationship with all the people in charge…. In addition to its being a Beautiful Place and Perfectly Equipped to welcome children, there was a lot of love behind it, and I think that’s where the Magic of the Dionisio Center lied.” (Lucila)
