Uganda: General Conference of Major Superiors

The General Conference of Major Superiors began its Work on Friday, September 4th. During that day, the Brothers present at the General Conference listened to one another using the Method of Conversation in the Spirit around the Theme of Love for the Poor (Apostolic Exhortation Dilexit Te): sharing the Calls and Responses that emerged from each Major Superior’s Personal Reading of the Document, Calls for each Individual, for their Sector, and for the Congregation.

The following day, Saturday, September 5th, was the Centenary Celebration of the Province that was hosting us (see previous News Item).

On Sunday, September 6th, the General Council had planned a First Day to discover the Province here in Uganda: Early departure from Nabinooya, to cross the Equator Line, an Essential Stop on the road to Kasasa and Kitovu.

Arrival at Kitovu, St. Henry’s College. It should be noted that at the time of the General Conference, the Students were on Holiday, so the Schools were empty. However, thanks to the Hospitality of the Brothers of Kitovu and Mr. John Bosco DDUNGU, a Teacher and Former Member of the International Commission of the Mennaisian Family, we were able to visit that School, which has existed since 1927, a year after the Brothers arrived in Uganda… making it a Century-Old Institution! … a School constantly being Renovated and Expanded to Accommodate its 1,500 Students, all of whom are Boarders.

Visit to the Novitiate in Kasasa / A warm Welcome from the Brothers Formators at the Novitiate and Kasasa School. Visit to the Novitiate; a Meal shared with the Novices who come from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan; this year there are 10 of them, an International Formation Community! Over the past two years, extensive Renovations has been carried out, improving Life for everyone in that Important Formation House in East Africa.

Below are photos of the 4 Novices from Tanzania-Kenya with Brother Anthony Kamuhanda, the 3 Novices from South Sudan, the 2 Novices from Uganda, then the Novice from Rwanda with Brother Damien Habimana and the Family Photo of the day.

The Conference resumed its Work on Monday, September 7th, which was devoted to a Deeper Reflection on Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi Te. The Discussions focused specifically on the Initiatives and Responses undertaken by the Provinces and Districts concerning the Love of the Poor. At the end of the day, Appeals and Initiatives were shared and proposed to the General Government to better live out that Call to Love the Poor within the Congregation.

Tuesday, September 8th, was dedicated to a Review of the Work of the Commissions of Major Superiors set up in 2024… Commissions: Formation of Young Brothers; Network of Mennaisian Schools and Young Adults; Initial and Continuing Formation; Mennaisian Family and Solidarity, Mission ad Gentes.
