The 3 Brothers of Manatuto (East Timor), at the end of June 2026, joined the Brothers from Indonesia to live their <\/strong>Retreat<\/strong> in Kupang (Timor, <\/strong>W<\/strong>estern part of Indonesia<\/strong>)<\/strong>. On that occasion, the Brothers of Manatuto shared the latest <\/strong>N<\/strong>ews from the <\/strong>M<\/strong>ission in Timor-Leste.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s listen to Brother St\u00e9phane Le Pape<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0<\/em>Being here among all of you in this <\/em>R<\/em>etreat <\/em>A<\/em>tmosphere in Kupang is an <\/em>I<\/em>mmense <\/em>J<\/em>oy and a <\/em>G<\/em>reat <\/em>B<\/em>lessing for me. On this <\/em>P<\/em>recious <\/em>O<\/em>ccasion, I would share to you the <\/em>G<\/em>ood <\/em>N<\/em>ews, <\/em>C<\/em>hallenges, and <\/em>H<\/em>opes from <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>N<\/em>ew <\/em>M<\/em>ission <\/em>F<\/em>ield in Timor-Leste.<\/em><\/p>\n

As you already know, we are <\/em>T<\/em>hree Brothers in Manatuto, Timor-Leste: Bro. Festo( since 19.01.2026), Bro. Philippe(since 20.01.2025) and Bro. Stef(since 13.01.2025).<\/strong> Bro. Philippe and Bro. Stef spent 3 <\/em>M<\/em>onths at the SVD <\/em>C<\/em>onvent of Culuhun-Dili and then moved( 1<\/em>st<\/sup><\/em> May 2025) to Manatuto where Bro. Festo joined them.<\/em><\/p>\n

I would divide this <\/em>S<\/em>hort <\/em>P<\/em>resentation into <\/em>T<\/em>hree <\/em>C<\/em>hapters of <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>J<\/em>ourney: Beginnings, The First Year, and The Future.<\/em><\/p>\n

PART 1: BEGINNINGS & WELCOMING<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"We begin with <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>E<\/em>arly <\/em>D<\/em>ays. Our very <\/em>F<\/em>irst <\/em>S<\/em>teps upon landing in Timor-Leste were filled with <\/em>G<\/em><\/strong>ratitude<\/em><\/strong>, yet also a bit of <\/em>U<\/em><\/strong>ncertainty<\/em><\/strong>. Facing a <\/em>N<\/em>ew <\/em>T<\/em>errain, a <\/em>N<\/em>ew <\/em>C<\/em>ulture, and a <\/em>N<\/em>ew <\/em>E<\/em>nvironment was a challenge in itself for us.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, all those <\/em>A<\/em>nxieties vanished instantly thanks to an <\/em>E<\/em>xtraordinary <\/em>W<\/em>armth. We were welcomed with <\/em>O<\/em>pen <\/em>A<\/em>rms by the SVD, the <\/em>L<\/em>ocal Church, <\/em>L<\/em>ocal <\/em>A<\/em>uthorities, and the <\/em>E<\/em>ntire <\/em>C<\/em>ommunity. We successfully overcame the <\/em>I<\/em>nitial <\/em>C<\/em>hallenges regarding <\/em>L<\/em>ogistics, finding a residence, and adapting to the <\/em>E<\/em>nvironment through their <\/em>G<\/em>enerosity, and of course, through the <\/em>S<\/em>trength of the <\/em>P<\/em>rayers that continuously flowed from the Brothers across the Congregation, especially the Asia District.<\/em><\/p>\n

PART 2: THE FIRST YEAR AND MISSION<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em><\/p>\n

Entering the <\/em>F<\/em>irst <\/em>Y<\/em>ear, <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>M<\/em>ain <\/em>P<\/em>riority was to take <\/em>R<\/em>oot. We started with the <\/em>H<\/em>umility to learn. Learning the Tetum <\/strong><\/em>L<\/em><\/strong>anguage<\/em><\/strong> became <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>K<\/em>ey to breaking down <\/em>C<\/em>ommunication <\/em>B<\/em>arriers, allowing us to integrate and to start to truly understand the depth of the <\/em>S<\/em>oul and <\/em>C<\/em>ulture of the people there.<\/em><\/p>\n

From that <\/em>L<\/em>inguistic <\/em>F<\/em>oundation, we began to integrate ourselves into <\/em>P<\/em>arish <\/em>L<\/em>ife through a <\/em>L<\/em>iving and <\/em>T<\/em>angible <\/em>P<\/em>resence among the <\/em>P<\/em>arishioners. Every <\/em>W<\/em>eek, we received a <\/em>B<\/em>eautiful <\/em>T<\/em>rust of <\/em>F<\/em>aith: taking part in the <\/em>H<\/em>oly <\/em>M<\/em>ission of distributing Holy Communion to the <\/em>E<\/em>lderly and the <\/em>S<\/em>ick in their <\/em>H<\/em>omes. That <\/strong><\/em>P<\/em><\/strong>resence brought the <\/em><\/strong>R<\/em><\/strong>eal, <\/em><\/strong>C<\/em><\/strong>omforting <\/em><\/strong>P<\/em><\/strong>resence of Christ to those who suffer.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Furthermore, in harmony with the La Mennais <\/em>C<\/em>harism, we took an <\/em>A<\/em>ctive <\/em>R<\/em>ole in <\/em>F<\/em>ormation and <\/em>E<\/em>ducation. Within the <\/em>P<\/em>arish <\/em>S<\/em>cope, we participated in providing <\/em>F<\/em><\/strong>aith <\/em><\/strong>F<\/em><\/strong>ormation for the <\/em><\/strong>Y<\/em><\/strong>outh, including the <\/em><\/strong>C<\/em><\/strong>atechesis for Confirmation <\/em><\/strong>P<\/em><\/strong>reparation.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the <\/em>F<\/em>ield of <\/em>F<\/em>ormal <\/em>E<\/em>ducation at the Catholic School of Manatuto, we were entrusted with <\/strong><\/em>T<\/em><\/strong>eaching English and Portuguese.<\/em><\/strong> Through those <\/em>C<\/em>lassrooms and <\/em>F<\/em>aith <\/em>F<\/em>ormation <\/em>P<\/em>rograms, together we were opening up horizons for a <\/em>B<\/em>righter <\/em>F<\/em>uture for the <\/em>Y<\/em>outh of Timor-Leste. <\/em>\"\"<\/em><\/p>\n

PART 3: THE FUTURE & OUR VISION<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dear Brothers, the <\/em>F<\/em>oundation of the <\/em>F<\/em>irst <\/em>Y<\/em>ear had been laid, but <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>E<\/em>yes now look ahead. There are <\/em>T<\/em>hree <\/em>M<\/em>ajor <\/em>P<\/em>riorities that form the future vision of <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>M<\/em>ission in Timor-Leste:<\/em><\/p>\n

First, we long to establish a <\/em>S<\/em>elf-<\/em>R<\/em>eliant La Mennais Community. We need to lay the <\/em>F<\/em>irst <\/em>S<\/em>tone to build a <\/strong><\/em>S<\/em><\/strong>turdy <\/em><\/strong>C<\/em><\/strong>ommunity <\/em><\/strong>H<\/em><\/strong>ouse<\/em><\/strong>, which would become the <\/em>H<\/em>eart of <\/em>F<\/em>raternity and the witness of <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>R<\/em>eligious <\/em>L<\/em>ife there.<\/em><\/p>\n

Second, that <\/em>M<\/em>ission <\/em>F<\/em>ield is vast and requires more <\/em>H<\/em>arvesters. Therefore, <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>N<\/em>ext <\/em>M<\/em>ajor <\/em>P<\/em>riority would be to establish a House of Formation<\/strong>. That place would serve as the <\/em>O<\/em>fficial <\/em>H<\/em>ub to <\/em>R<\/em>ecruit, <\/em>E<\/em>ducate, and <\/em>A<\/em>ccompany <\/em>L<\/em>ocal <\/em>Y<\/em>oung <\/em>M<\/em>en of Timor-Leste who would be called by God to become La Mennais Brothers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Third, in the future, we would be preparing to take on the <\/em>R<\/em>esponsibility of managing a <\/strong><\/em>P<\/em><\/strong>rimary <\/em><\/strong>S<\/em><\/strong>chool<\/em><\/strong>. Through managing that <\/em>P<\/em>rimary <\/em>S<\/em>chool, we would instill the La Mennais <\/em>E<\/em>ducational <\/em>C<\/em>harism and shape the <\/em>C<\/em>haracter of Timor-Leste’s <\/em>C<\/em>hildren from the earliest possible age.<\/em><\/p>\n

CONCLUSION<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The La Mennais Mission in Timor-Leste has only just begun, and the <\/em>R<\/em>oad ahead is still long and demanding. We recognize that that <\/em>W<\/em>ork relies in part on the hospitality of the <\/em>P<\/em>eople and the <\/em>L<\/em>ocal Church, and especially on the decision of the <\/em>L<\/em>ocal <\/em>B<\/em>ishop. We therefore know with certainty that we cannot walk that <\/em>P<\/em>ath alone.<\/em><\/p>\n

From that <\/em>R<\/em>etreat <\/em>H<\/em>ouse in Kupang, we earnestly ask for the <\/em>P<\/em>rayerful <\/em>S<\/em>upport, <\/em>B<\/em>lessings, and <\/em>C<\/em>ollaboration of all the Brothers, especially from the Asia District. Let us together guard that <\/em>D<\/em>ream and <\/em>F<\/em>uture <\/em>P<\/em>lan in Timor-Leste, so that <\/em>O<\/em>ur <\/em>M<\/em>ission may come to <\/em>F<\/em>ruition for the <\/em>G<\/em>reater <\/em>G<\/em>lory of God.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
