Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic exalted the memory of the spirit of resistance by receiving at the Elysee the winners of the 50th National Contest of Resistance and Deportation. 40 000 high school students from
2609 schools took part in the contest, on "the suppression of the Resistance in France by the occupation authorities and the Vichy regime," by making individual assignments in class or collective works written or audiovisual. Several hundred of them received awards in May 2011 by county boards. The best achievements were transmitted to a national panel that distinguished 18 works by 48 students.
"The program of the National Council of Resistance is the bedrock of our social model. If we have to adapt to the real world and changes in society, we must remain faithful to its spirit," said Mr Sarkozy to hundreds of students, teachers and some former Resistance fighters.
"Peace, respect for human rights, the economic and social progress, we have the task of deepening them and passing on the torch to new generations."
