IN SPAIN
From the earliest times
In 1903, expelled from their schools by the French government and her chief , Emile Combes, and not being allowed to teach, many brothers from the South of France choose to emigrate to Spain.
On June 13, 1903, four brothers settle in a haunted house at Zugarramurdi, near the border. About 15 other brothers follow them in October. The Mennaisian Spanish branch was born.
The beginnings were difficult, the brothers being without resources. The first establishments were at Mikelen Borda, Dancharinea, Lujua, and Etxebarri.
In 1914, Bro. Ulysse Baron, the provincial, buys the seaside resort residence of Nanclares de la Oca, which has been unoccupied for 14 years: then the Brothers had a mother house and a formation center.
Today.
As the province developed, Spain sent some missionary brothers to Haiti, founded communities in Argentina, and recently in Chile and Bolivia.
In Spain, about 120 brothers manage today six major colleges, welcoming children from kindergarten to “A levels”: Bilbao, Reinosa, Aquilar de Campoo, Portugalete, Madrid, San Domingo de la Calzada. Recently they opened two technical centers at Valladolid (1991) and Zamora (1998), for young “drop outs”.
The communities of Chile and Bolivia depend directly on the province and offer to about 15 brothers the opportunity to answer to a quite demanding missionary commitment. Young lay volunteers get involved for a few weeks or a whole year in the animation of these missionary establishments.
The shared mission.
The province and each community put much effort into the formation of teachers, parents and young people, so that brothers and lay people share and live by the Mennaisian charisma and the educational principles of Jean-Marie de la Mennais. In October 2004, the international congress held at Bilbao, gathering 170 brothers and lay people from Spain, France, England and Italy, shows this vitality. |
